The Travellers Who Sold Their Caravan

The Travellers Who Sold Their Caravan

Up to now, we made more than 10.000 kilometers on our journey we started 6 months ago. We have been in 20 different cities, visited 10 farms and eco-villages, and camped in more than 40 different places. We met many nice people… Sometimes we stuck on the road, had some trouble. But we didn’t regret even just for one day… Throughout this time, we have written 18 blogs and shared more than 300 photographs. Now, our journey will continue abroad, in South Asia. But, we will be travelling without our fellow, Murtaza. We leave our caravan who took us everywhere and carried all our load. Both because of the length of road lying before us, and because of the extra fund needed for caravan to go out of the country (Vehicle Passport, Traffic Insurance, Carnet de Passages etc.), we are leaving with our backpacks. We won’t be on the same four wheels anymore. But with different kind of transports –by train, by hitchhiking, however we can- we continue exploring different places of Asia to learn about ecologic life and share the seeds in our bags and to share what we learned. On 11 of November, we are going to India (Chennai) from Istanbul by plane. Our journey will start form there, and our first stops will be Sadhana Forest and Auroville. Sadhana Forest is a project for the re-forestration of a land of 70 hectares effected by erosion with locals also to produce food for the people. And Auroville is the largest eco-village or eco-town of the world; population: 2500 approx. We are willing to experience these communities by...
On the Road

On the Road

In an expanding universe, in a galaxy cruising in 550 km per second, around a star moving in 2200 km per second, on a plant orbiting in 29 km per second, we are moving slowly. Without a definite target, without trying to catch something, calmly… And when the side of the earth that we are on turns its back to the sun, we wait for the morning wherever the road brought us.      All of us; all the living beings, earth, air and water; are travellers on the planet. We are on the way as long as we exist. Because, being on the way is not only moving on the road. In a vehicle moving from point A to point B, if there is just point B in the person’s mind, s/he is just at the spot between A and B, not on the way. Because being on the way is not being on a spot like in Zenon Paradox, it’s just being the way to there. Even a tree which grows and finally dies on the spot it has fallen when it was a seed is travelling. It changes with everything else around it and travels in the circle of life. Since we left being settled and begin travelling with our home, making everywhere our home, we are making two different trips that engage. One of them is on the earth and the other one is in us… Our inner travel is also two different engaging trips, two different trips made together by two people.                 We are in a place that our trip bring us; Yeniköy,...
How to transform a caravan to an Eco-van

How to transform a caravan to an Eco-van

It is possible to reduce our carbon footprint by using renewable resources both for fuel and for electricity. We used the sun shining above us and waste oil instead of fossil fuels while travelling by caravan to emit less carbon to nature and to prevent the disasters caused by (coal plants, dams, wind turbines) our energy consumption. Waste Oil Conversion It’s possible for all diesel vehicles without electronic sections to install the waste oil conversion system. After filtering, we use the waste oil, previously used for cooking, directly in the engine with a separate fuel tank. In contrast to bio-diesel, the oil doesn’t pass through a chemical process; it is just filtered in accordance with the tolerance of the engine. Re-using waste oil in this way not only prevents opening of new mono-culture farming areas just for producing bio-diesel, but also obviates the problem of water pollution caused by waste oil that couldn’t be eliminated. To use waste oil in the vehicle, a yacht type fuel tank (20-40 liters), a conversion kit, optionally with an electronic heat indicator, including connection cables, a fuel pump and a couple of oil filters in different intensity is needed. We fill the oil tank with waste oil, gathered from restaurants on our way, after getting rid of big particles using a piece of pervious cloth and filtering the oil in accordance with the engine oil filter (ours is 5 microns). The vehicle is started with diesel fuel first, then the second tank is activated when the engine reaches a certain temperature. To clean the oil residues in the motor (just like the stickiness in...
Preparation Process Vol.1

Preparation Process Vol.1

Approximately 2 years have passed since we have decided to set for the journey and started to make savings. It has been approximately 3 months since we left our jobs and 1 month since we have closed our home.  But “the last preparations”  stage didn’t come to an end yet, maybe it will never end. We knew that we wouldn’t start this journey like preparing our back packs and going for a holiday, but we hadn’t expected that it would be such a long process. Now we are counting days restively to leave auto-industries and step into the nature.               While were dreaming to simplify our lives, we have spent a lot of money and energy to buy a caravan, even it is a very simple caravan, and it’s never ending maintenance expenses because of its age. There are a lot of people asking us why we didn’t buy a better caravan. We would be working for 2 years more for it and postpone our dreams. Maybe we would have new health problems in this process and our trip would be postponed more and more. Yes, it is not easy to realize their dreams for people like us, who don’t live in material wealth. But it doesn’t have to be easy, it’s enough not be impossible. Even the difficulties we have now and we will have while travelling are exhausting, they gives pleasure and experience that you can’t buy with pieces of paper. We will remember them with a smile while telling it to our grandchildren,...
